Function and area of knowledge

The mentorship philosophy is guided by the belief that efforts to compartmentalize fields are artificial and ultimately limiting. We strive to harmonize breadth with depth, with a particular focus on the history of knowledge, such as the history of economic thought. Our aim is to provide a nurturing environment for individuals drawn to the polymath ideal—those who seek not only extensive knowledge but also actively engage in knowledge creation, versatility, and adaptation in an increasingly specialized world. We encourage idea generation while traversing various disciplines, inspired by historical semi-formal intellectual gatherings like the Edinburgh Evening Club, Leipzig Circle, Eranos Circle, and Vienna Circle, which emphasized diverse viewpoints and cognitive diversity. The mentorship program fosters experimentation, tailoring guidance to individual capabilities, cultivating independence of thought, and encouraging departure from tradition. Unlike many traditional university settings characterized by excessive nurturing, we prioritize intellectual rigor and challenge, preparing mentees to be intellectual marathon runners adept at navigating interdisciplinary landscapes and in applying various tools of thought and exploration.
